Aasima Jan, a government school teacher from Baramulla, is dedicated to breaking the silence around menstruation in north Kashmir's tribal villages. For years, the 42-year-old has conducted awareness sessions on menstrual health, hygiene, and stigma, also encouraging school dropouts to return. Her efforts, which include distributing sanitary pads and counselling parents, earned her Jammu & Kashmir's 'Best Teacher Award' in 2023. Jan's initiative extends to remote areas like Gurez and Uri, reaching nomadic communities and impacting thousands of girls and families.
