Gujarat HC Stays Order Allowing Non-Veg Food Near Somnath Temple

Mint · india

The Gujarat High Court has stayed a single-judge order that had previously lifted restrictions on non-vegetarian food sales near the Somnath temple. A division bench issued the stay following an appeal by the Gujarat government, allowing the district collector's notification prohibiting such sales within a 500-metre radius to remain in force. Hotel and restaurant owners had challenged the ban, arguing it violated their right to livelihood. The government contended that Somnath's spiritual significance justified the restrictions. The court will hear the matter again on December 26.
