Florida Pythons May Spread Seeds, Reshaping Everglades Ecosystem

Times of India - India · india

Florida's invasive Burmese pythons, known for decimating native mammal populations, may also be influencing the Everglades landscape in an unexpected way. New research indicates these large snakes could be acting as seed dispersers by consuming fruit-eating birds and mammals. Scientists found 25 different seed types in python digestive tracts, including those from native plants like cabbage palm. Notably, nearly 40% of cabbage palm seeds survived digestion and germinated, suggesting pythons can transport viable seeds to new areas. This discovery highlights a surprising indirect ecological role for the invasive predator.
