The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed that authorities ordering the takedown of social media content must inform the user, not just the intermediary. This directive was issued in response to a petition by Haryana 24 News Network, whose Facebook page was blocked without prior notice. The court stated that while the 2021 IT Rules don't explicitly mandate user notification, it is an obligation under the principles of natural justice. This ruling ensures greater transparency and due process for users facing content removal.
