Telecom Regulator Proposes New Licence Rules For Free Internet TV Channels
Hindustan Times · technology
India's telecom regulator has recommended that apps offering free, ad-supported TV channels over the internet should require a government licence, similar to cable and DTH operators. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) sent its recommendations to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which had requested them following complaints from cable operators. The proposal suggests a national authorisation under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, with a ₹1 lakh entry fee for a 20-year licence. Apps could stream existing ministry-approved channels, while new channels made for apps would need registration and annual fees.
