Geological History Offers Clues To Future Monsoon Behaviour, Says IIT Professor
The Hindu · india
Understanding future climate variability requires studying geological and ocean-atmosphere processes that have shaped monsoons over thousands of years, according to IIT Kharagpur Professor Anil Kumar Gupta. Natural records in marine sediments, lake deposits, and ice cores help reconstruct past climatic conditions and monsoon behaviour. Gupta highlighted that major geological events like the closure of the Tethys Ocean and the uplift of the Himalayas have significantly influenced monsoon dynamics. Studying these long-term trends is crucial for predicting present-day climate systems and their evolution.
