Campbell Island Sheep Developed Unique Traits After Being Left Alone For Decades

Hindustan Times · science

Over 4,000 sheep were left on Campbell Island, a remote sub-Antarctic island, in 1931 when farming ceased. Decades of isolation, from 1931 to the 1970s, allowed the feral flock to develop unusual traits. Researchers observed that sheep which shed their fleeces, rather than growing double fleeces that attracted peat and dung, were more successful at breeding. The females also began breeding at an earlier age, increasing lambing rates significantly. In the 1970s, some sheep were collected as a rare breed to study their potential resistance to diseases like foot rot.
