Florida's Garden Plants Invade Natural Habitats, Threatening Native Species

TOI - Lifestyle · lifestyle

Eight popular ornamental garden plants in Florida are becoming invasive, spreading beyond backyards into natural habitats like wetlands and forests. These plants, chosen for their bright flowers and fast growth, now crowd out native species and are costly to remove. Their ability to spread through seeds, runners, and even small root pieces makes them difficult to control. The University of Florida's IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants tracks these invasive species, highlighting the challenge for homeowners and ecosystems alike.
