India Introduces Merchant Discount Rate on UPI Transactions Above ₹2,000
The Hindu - Business · business
UPI will implement a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on specified merchant transactions exceeding ₹2,000 from October 15. While consumers are not directly charged, this marks a shift from UPI's previous zero-MDR model for merchants. The government argues this is necessary to cover UPI's operational costs, including servers and security. However, critics question the move, highlighting UPI's significant economic savings in reduced cash handling, improved formalisation, and enhanced tax compliance across the economy.
