Australia Eradicates Rabbits To Save Rare Seabird Colony
Times of India · environment
In 1997, Australia launched a conservation effort to save the rare Gould's petrel on Cabbage Tree Island. The presence of European rabbits, introduced in 1906, had severely damaged the petrels' habitat by consuming vegetation. A multi-pronged eradication campaign, using myxomatosis, rabbit haemorrhagic disease, and aerial baiting, successfully removed the rabbits. By 2000, the petrel colony had rebounded significantly, with over 800 breeding pairs producing more than 400 young annually. This success demonstrated the effectiveness of invasive species removal in restoring threatened wildlife populations.
