Many people assume bleeding in the toilet is due to piles, but Dr. Sumeet Shah warns it could be an anal fissure. While haemorrhoids involve swollen blood vessels, fissures are small tears in the anal canal lining. Fissures cause sharp pain during and after bowel movements, often with visible fresh red blood. Haemorrhoids typically present with discomfort, itching, or painless bleeding. Both conditions can stem from increased pressure due to constipation, straining, and low-fibre diets.
