Cornell Scientists Engineer Tomatoes To Signal Low Nitrogen Levels
Times of India - India · india
Cornell University scientists have developed genetically engineered tomato plants, named RedAlert, that change to a red-purple colour when nitrogen levels in the soil become scarce. This visible signal aims to provide farmers with an early warning of nutrient deficiencies, potentially allowing for more precise fertiliser application. The plants produce betanin, a pigment found in beets, in response to low nitrogen.
