Parents Funding NRI Child's Home Abroad Rules

Business Standard · business

Indian parents can help NRI or OCI children buy overseas property by remitting funds under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Each resident individual has a $250,000 annual limit, which can be pooled by both parents up to $500,000, provided the limit is not exhausted by other transactions. Unused LRS limits do not carry forward to the next financial year. Parents must decide whether to structure the transfer as a gift or loan, as documentation and tax implications differ.
