Corvo Island Residents Switch Off Lights For Five Nights To Aid Young Seabirds
Times of India · environment
Residents of Portugal's tiny Corvo Island voluntarily switch off public lights for five nights each autumn to help young seabirds find the ocean. This conservation effort, which began in 1991, aims to prevent disorientation caused by artificial lighting, which can lead to the birds hitting buildings or roads. The initiative has expanded across the Azores, with a wider campaign saving over 30,000 fledglings since 2015.
