UK Movement Seeks Pardon For Women Executed For Witchcraft Centuries Ago
CBS News · world
A movement is underway in the U.K. to pardon women executed for witchcraft centuries ago, particularly in Maidstone, where over 20 women were hanged. Witch hunts peaked in England in the 1600s, with around 5,000 women executed across England and Scotland. Councilors are petitioning the U.K. government and King Charles III for an official pardon, citing these executions as miscarriages of justice. Unlike the pardoned witches of Salem, no convicted witch in the U.K. has yet been officially exonerated.
