Residents in Keralam's forest fringes, particularly in Kottayam and Idukki districts, are expressing deep concerns over the proposed Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) notification. The latest draft, issued on July 27, designates 9,993.7 sq km across 131 villages as ESA. While the notification prohibits mining and quarrying, residents fear it will disrupt their long-established lives and agricultural practices, potentially forcing them to abandon ancestral lands.
