India Needs Home-Based Palliative Care Beyond Hospitals, Says Experts

Times of India · health

Experts emphasize that India must expand palliative care beyond hospitals to reach patients at home, especially those with chronic illnesses. Kerala's successful community-based model, integrating government, local bodies, and volunteers, offers a blueprint. This model significantly increases home visits, with Kerala conducting nearly 9.8 lakh visits compared to Uttar Pradesh's 33,800 in 2024-25. Palliative care focuses on relieving suffering, preserving dignity, and improving quality of life alongside ongoing medical treatment. Experts suggest integrating palliative care with primary healthcare and strengthening community involvement to ensure last-mile delivery.
