Spain Sees Massive Protests After Parliament Votes Down Housing Bills
DW World · world
Tens of thousands of people protested across Spain on Saturday, demanding affordable housing. The demonstrations followed the narrow defeat of two emergency bills in parliament aimed at supporting renters and preventing evictions. Organizers estimated 500,000 people participated in Madrid, while police reported around 70,000. Similar protests occurred in about 50 other cities, with police using tear gas and rubber bullets in Valencia. The failed legislation, proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, included measures for automatic tenancy contract renewal and restrictions on evicting vulnerable tenants.
