Lebanon President Seeks French Aid To Prevent Southern Security Vacuum

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has requested assistance from visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot to prevent a security vacuum in southern Lebanon. This comes as the mandate for UN peacekeepers is set to expire at the end of 2026. Aoun expressed Lebanon's preference for extending the UNIFIL mandate but welcomed any arrangement ensuring an international presence to avoid direct contact between the Lebanese and Israeli armies. France and Italy have proposed establishing a multinational force to fill the void.
