World to Scrap Leap Seconds by 2027 for More Flexible Timekeeping

Hindustan Times · science

Global timekeeping is set to change as 69 countries have voted to phase out the leap second by May 2027. This tiny adjustment, used since 1972 to keep atomic clocks aligned with Earth's rotation, has caused issues for digital systems. A new, more flexible approach will allow Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to drift up to an hour from astronomical time before a correction is needed.
