Kutch Camel Population Shrinks Dramatically Due To Industrialisation

The Hindu · india

The camel population in Gujarat's Kutch district has seen a significant decline, with numbers falling from thousands to fewer than 200 at the annual Bhed Mata Camel Fair. Veteran photographer Hiralal Balwa noted a drastic reduction since the 1980s. Camel herders fear the animals could disappear within 10 to 15 years. Factors contributing to this decline include industrialisation, habitat loss due to land diversion for projects, and restrictions on grazing. The invasive Prosopis juliflora species has further worsened the situation.
