Mumbai Flood Woes Require More Than Just Drains
Hindustan Times · environment
Mumbai's annual flooding is often treated as a drainage issue, with solutions focusing on desilting and improving infrastructure. However, the city must also adopt a 'blue-green infrastructure' approach to manage intense rainfall. This involves slowing, storing, and absorbing rainwater before it reaches the drainage network. Research indicates that combining conventional drainage with systems like rain gardens and permeable pavements can reduce runoff and flooding. Successful implementation depends on strategic placement, design, and municipal capacity.
