Algeria's Lower House Approves Death Penalty for Forest Arsonists Amidst Wildfire Crisis

Algeria's National People's Assembly has voted to amend the penal code, introducing the death penalty for individuals convicted of arson. This move follows deadly wildfires that have devastated the country's forests and claimed at least 12 lives. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had called for the amendment in September. While Algeria has observed a moratorium on capital punishment since 1993, human rights groups have criticized the law, urging a focus on prevention and emergency response instead. The bill now proceeds to the upper house for review.
