New York Town Resists 1GW AI Data Centre Over Power Concerns
Times of India · technology
Residents of East Fishkill, New York, a town historically known for IBM's semiconductor plant, are opposing a proposed 1-gigawatt AI data centre. The massive facility, planned by Treetop Companies, would span over 1 million square feet and consume electricity equivalent to the entire city of Buffalo. Concerns include increased electricity costs, environmental impact, and limited job creation for the local population of 30,000. In response, the town board has implemented a three-year moratorium on new data centres larger than 20 megawatts.
