Nitin Gadkari Ministry Backs IIT Tech Using Waste Plastic in National Highway Construction

Times of India · environment

India's Road Transport Ministry has adopted an IIT-developed technology to use waste plastic in bitumen for national highway construction. A pilot stretch on NH-44 in Jhansi has been laid using this method. This innovation could reduce bitumen consumption by 4% and cut costs by 20%. It also offers a solution for managing India's daily plastic waste generation of 25,000 tonnes. The technology, patented by IIT (BHU), Varanasi, promises enhanced road durability and reduced reliance on imported bitumen.
