Male Burmese pythons in South Florida exhibit a significant seasonal increase in testosterone as the breeding season approaches, according to a new study. Researchers tracked hormone levels in free-ranging snakes, finding that testosterone peaks in November before breeding and then declines. In contrast, another hormone, corticosterone, linked to stress, showed no clear seasonal pattern and varied more unpredictably. The study suggests that changing day length is a key environmental factor influencing the pythons' testosterone cycle, preparing them for reproduction.
