Ladakh's Autonomy Quest Continues Amidst Broken Central Government Promises

The Central government has once again broken its promises regarding Ladakh's quest for democratic autonomy. In February, it reneged on an assurance made in 2019 to grant Ladakh autonomy under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This schedule allows for the establishment of autonomous district councils, similar to those in four other tribal areas in the North East. This development follows the downgrading of Jammu and Kashmir's status to two Union Territories, including Ladakh, in 2019. The latest proposal is seen as a continuation of broken promises.
