Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee rejected calls to cut interest rates to ease the US government's debt burden, emphasizing central bank independence. He described such proposals as a "monetise the debt" argument, warning it could fuel inflation and increase borrowing costs. Goolsbee stated that fiscal policy and deficits only matter to the Fed when they affect inflation. Former President Donald Trump has previously urged the Fed to cut rates significantly.
