Congress Alleges Voter ID Rule for Welfare Will Exclude Millions

The Hindu · india

The Congress party has linked the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls with a Union Minister's suggestion to use voter IDs instead of Aadhaar for welfare benefits. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the move, stating it could lead to the exclusion of beneficiaries on a massive scale. He alleged that this represents 'haq-huqooq chori' (rights theft) beyond 'vote chori' (vote theft). The party argues that making voter ID the basis for accessing social welfare schemes will disenfranchise more people, echoing concerns about Aadhaar's previous exclusionary impacts.
