Manas Rhinos Thrive As Grasslands Shrink Significantly

Over 40 greater one-horned rhinos now inhabit Manas National Park, Assam, with breeding populations producing calves since 2012. This marks a significant recovery after the species was extirpated by poaching in the late 1990s. However, the rhinos' essential grassland habitat has drastically reduced, falling from over 53% in 1990 to just over 30% by 2019. This shrinking habitat poses a critical challenge to the long-term survival and growth of the reintroduced rhino population.
