India Faces Growing Infectious Disease Risk From Climate Change Effects

Scroll · environment

India is at increasing risk of infectious diseases due to the escalating effects of climate change. Extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, and erratic rainfall are reshaping disease ecology. These changes can alter pathogen survival, shift the distribution of disease-carrying insects, and increase contact between humans, animals, and pathogens. This combination heightens the likelihood of disease outbreaks in new areas and at unexpected times. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned of increasing heatwaves and extreme rainfall events in the coming years.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
