Himalayan Fault Beneath Uttarakhand Remains Locked, Building Earthquake Strain

Times of India · science

A new study reveals the Himalayan fault beneath Uttarakhand is locked, accumulating tectonic strain at approximately 18 mm annually. This locked section of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) extends about 115 km wide and nearly 20 km deep, storing elastic strain instead of releasing it through steady movement. Researchers combined GNSS and satellite radar data to measure ground deformation, finding strong plate coupling of over 80%. The fault holds an energy reservoir equivalent to one Mw 8 earthquake every 100 years, indicating significant seismic risk.
