Record 30,000 Endangered Coho Salmon Return to California's Mendocino Rivers

Times of India · environment

California's Mendocino Coast rivers saw an estimated 30,000 endangered coho salmon return during the 2024-25 spawning season, the largest number recorded in years. This figure is double the previous season's record and significantly higher than the fewer than 3,000 fish seen in some runs a decade ago. NOAA Fisheries attributes this recovery to years of habitat restoration, stream reconnection, and favourable environmental conditions. The increase signifies a major positive change for the most endangered subset of coho salmon, demonstrating that recovery is possible when conservation efforts align with nature.
