Supreme Court Questions UPI MDR Charges

The Supreme Court has sought responses from the central government and the Reserve Bank of India regarding the imposition of MDR on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned whether the charge is a tax or a fee, and its legal basis. The government stated the charges, applicable, are not a tax but a settlement fee to cover bank expenses for processing transactions. The court has asked for a detailed affidavit addressing these technical and legal aspects.

शुल्क पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने उठाए सवाल

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने केंद्र सरकार और भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक से ₹2,000 से ज़्यादा के UPI ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर MDR शुल्क लगाने के बारे में जवाब मांगा है। चीफ जस्टिस सूर्यकांत की अगुवाई वाली बेंच ने पूछा कि क्या यह शुल्क एक टैक्स है या फीस, और इसका कानूनी आधार क्या है। सरकार ने बताया कि यह शुल्क टैक्स नहीं, बल्कि बैंकों के ट्रांज़ैक्शन प्रोसेसिंग के खर्चों को कवर करने के लिए एक सेटलमेंट फीस है। कोर्ट ने इन तकनीकी और कानूनी पहलुओं पर विस्तृत हलफनामा मांगा है।
