Punjab Farm Fires Contribute Nearly Half Of Black Carbon Pollution: Study

Hindustan Times · environment

A recent study by IIT Delhi, PGIMER, and Panjab University reveals that stubble burning in Punjab contributes nearly half of the black carbon pollution in rural areas. During peak burning hours, this contribution can exceed 90%. Northwesterly winds carry smoke-laden air masses from Punjab towards the Indo-Gangetic plain, potentially impacting air quality in regions like the National Capital Region (NCR). The research, published in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, used intensive field campaigns and advanced monitoring instruments to quantify the pollution source.
