RBI Drains & Re-Injects Banking Liquidity To Align Market Conditions

Economic Times · business

The Reserve Bank of India has significantly reduced banking system liquidity from a surplus of ₹11 lakh crore to ₹48,303 crore over six weeks. This was done to counter inflationary pressures and align market conditions with its monetary tightening stance. Measures included temporary variable rate reverse repo auctions, sell-buy swaps, and increasing the daily cash reserve ratio to 99%. However, liquidity drain pushed overnight rates higher, prompting the RBI to temporarily inject funds via variable rate repo operations to prevent sharp rate increases.
