Ray Vetuskey, 64, is celebrating his mother Betty's 100th birthday by honouring the remarkable longevity of the kidney she donated to him in March 1978. Vetuskey was 16 when he received the transplant, which has now functioned for 46 years, far exceeding the average 15-20 year lifespan for donated kidneys. Doctors at University of Rochester Medicine expect the organ to last the rest of his life. Betty, who was 52 at the time of donation, passed away in 2008.
