SC: Professional Course Fee Hikes Midstream Only In Exceptional Cases

The Supreme Court has ruled that private colleges can only hike fees for professional courses midstream in exceptional circumstances. The court emphasized the need for fee certainty for students and families, noting that such expenses constitute a substantial portion of household income and savings. Many students rely on educational loans, and unexpected fee increases create significant financial insecurity. The bench quashed a 37% fee hike and a new development fee imposed by Dr BC Roy Engineering College in West Bengal for BTech courses.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फैसला सुनाया है कि प्राइवेट कॉलेज प्रोफेशनल कोर्स की फीस बीच में सिर्फ़ असाधारण परिस्थितियों में ही बढ़ा सकते हैं। कोर्ट ने छात्रों और परिवारों के लिए फीस की निश्चितता की ज़रूरत पर ज़ोर दिया, यह बताते हुए कि ऐसे ख़र्च घरेलू आय और बचत का एक बड़ा हिस्सा होते हैं। कई छात्र एजुकेशन लोन पर निर्भर करते हैं, और अप्रत्याशित फीस वृद्धि से काफ़ी वित्तीय असुरक्षा पैदा होती है। बेंच ने पश्चिम बंगाल के डॉ बी सी रॉय इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज द्वारा बीटेक कोर्स के लिए 37% फीस वृद्धि और एक नई डेवलपमेंट फीस को रद्द कर दिया।
