Stubble Burning Not Sole Cause of Poor Air Quality

Business Standard · environment

While stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana is often blamed for poor air quality, it is not the sole contributor. A policy change in Punjab, prohibiting paddy sowing before May 10, has led to increased burning. However, since 2010, power plants have emerged as a larger emission source than farms. Stubble burning is concentrated in three months, whereas power plant emissions occur year-round, making direct comparison difficult. Madhya Pradesh now accounts for nearly half of the farm fires.
