GST Council May Remove Arrest Powers, Raise Prosecution Threshold

Times of India - Business · business

The GST Council is set to consider significant reforms on October 7, potentially removing tax officers' power to arrest taxpayers and requiring judicial authorisation for arrests. Proposals also include raising the prosecution threshold from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore, narrowing criminal offences, and protecting genuine buyers' input tax credit. These changes aim to shift focus from arrest-led deterrence to technology-led detection and simpler compliance. The reforms are part of the government's next phase of GST simplification and proportionate enforcement.
