A new study suggests Keralam's ancient maritime trade routes may have influenced the genetic legacy of the Malabari goat. Researchers from KVASU reported the first complete mitochondrial genome of the breed, providing molecular evidence for goat movement along the Indian Ocean Spice Route. The Malabari goat shares high mitochondrial sequence identity with Meriz goats from Iraq and shows close maternal genetic relationships with goats from Oman, Arabia, and Gujarat.
