SC to RBI: Mandate Damages for Savings Lost in Digital Arrest Scams
Times of India · top
The Supreme Court has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to ensure its proposed standard operating procedure (SOP) mandates financial institutions to compensate customers who lose money due to digital fraud. The court noted that bank personnel's complicity is likely involved in fraudsters knowing account balances. The SOP, expected by November 30, should also require banks to immediately alert account holders of unusual high-value transactions and inform the police. The bench also questioned WhatsApp about potential measures to curb spam calls used in these scams.
