Toxic Positivity Can Backfire, Leading To Increased Stress And Anxiety

Times of India · health

Forcing cheerfulness and suppressing negative emotions can be detrimental, a phenomenon known as toxic positivity. A 2020 meta-analysis found that attempting to suppress thoughts often leads to a rebound effect, making them more accessible. This overgeneralisation of positivity can cause individuals to minimise their own feelings, leading to increased stress, emotional outbursts, anxiety, and strained relationships. Psychologists suggest acknowledging uncomfortable thoughts rather than fighting them is a more constructive approach to emotional well-being. Unacknowledged feelings do not disappear but can manifest as physical symptoms or difficulty understanding one's own emotions.
