Roman Author Lamented India's "Sink of World's Gold"

Business Standard · business

Roman author Pliny the Elder described India as the "sink of the world's gold" in his Naturalis Historia. He lamented a significant trade deficit where the Roman Empire lost wealth to India. Elite Romans had a strong demand for Indian luxury goods like spices, fine muslin, pearls, ivory, and gemstones. Roman merchants paid for these imports with gold and silver coins, leading to an annual drain of at least 50 million sestertii from the empire.
