India has strongly rejected claims made by a UN human rights expert regarding youth rights, calling the report "hearsay" and based on unverified submissions. Anuj Swarup, First Secretary at India's Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that the report by Special Rapporteur Gina Romero relied on anonymous inputs to criticise the country. Swarup urged the expert to verify information before making accusations, emphasizing that freedom of assembly and speech are constitutionally guaranteed in India. He also highlighted the government's constructive engagement with students protesting examination irregularities, leading to legislative action.
