Bangladesh Expert Calls Ganga Water Treaty Flawed, Needs Nepal's Inclusion

The Hindu - International · world

A leading Bangladesh river water expert has stated that the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty is flawed due to the absence of a guarantee clause and its failure to account for climate change. Manjur A. Chowdhury suggested the treaty, set to expire in December, should be replaced by a short-term agreement followed by a trilateral treaty including Nepal. He emphasized that rivers originating in Nepal contribute significantly to the Ganga's water flow, especially during lean months, and require monitoring.
