Punjab CM to Meet Panel on Anti-Sacrilege Law

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will convene a meeting of the seven-member coordination committee on Sunday to discuss the amended anti-sacrilege law. The committee will deliberate on the provisions of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, and its implementation. The law, passed by the Punjab Assembly on April 13, includes stricter punishments like life imprisonment and fines up to Rs 25 lakh for sacrilege. However, the Akal Takht has raised objections regarding the definition of 'custodian' and numbering of holy texts, prompting further discussion.

पंजाब के मुख्यमंत्री भगवंत मान रविवार को सात-सदस्यीय समन्वय समिति की बैठक बुलाएंगे ताकि संशोधित एंटी-सैक्रीलेज कानून पर चर्चा की जा सके। समिति 'जागृत ज्योत श्री गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब सत्कार (संशोधन) अधिनियम, 2026' के प्रावधानों और इसके कार्यान्वयन पर विचार-विमर्श करेगी। यह कानून, जिसे पंजाब विधानसभा ने 13 अप्रैल को पारित किया था, में पवित्र ग्रंथों के अपमान के लिए आजीवन कारावास और 25 लाख रुपये तक के जुर्माने जैसी कड़ी सजाएं शामिल हैं। हालांकि, अकाल तख्त ने 'संरक्षक' की परिभाषा और पवित्र ग्रंथों की संख्या को लेकर आपत्तियां जताई हैं, जिससे आगे चर्चा की आवश्यकता पड़ी है।
