India Lacks Broad Societal Trust, But Internal Group Trust Remains Strong

Hindustan Times · india

Surveys indicate India faces a trust deficit, with only 17% of citizens trusting "most people," ranking it 53rd globally. This contrasts with higher trust levels in countries like Denmark and the US. However, trust within specific groups, such as caste or community, remains robust and economically significant. Studies show preferential treatment in credit access when loan officers and borrowers share the same group affiliation. This suggests trust in India is not absent but narrowly focused on familiar circles.
