100 Obsolete Battle Tanks Sunk Off Alabama in 1994 Now Serve as Underwater Fish Habitats

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1994, 100 obsolete battle tanks were sunk off the coast of Alabama to create artificial reefs. The tanks were meticulously cleaned of all hazardous materials before being deployed in three rounds throughout that year. These submerged tanks, now resting 70 to 110 feet underwater, have become thriving habitats for marine life. A 2017 study indicated that artificial structures can significantly increase catch rates for young red snapper, suggesting the tanks are effectively supporting fish populations.
