An 1867-S Liberty Half Eagle $5 gold coin, minted in San Francisco and forgotten in a Texas closet, has sold for $97,600 at auction. This price more than quadrupled the previous record for the coin. Experts graded it as the finest known surviving example, with an MS63 grade. The coin belonged to a Union soldier and was passed down through generations before being stored away. Its rarity, with fewer than 100 estimated to survive, attracted significant collector interest, highlighting the value of well-preserved historical currency.
